Founded in the summer of 2014 under the direction of Barry Sargent, Ensemble Tramuntana was born with the purpose of promoting the talent of musicians from the Balearic Islands. Inspired by the landscape of the Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the ensemble is renowned for its versatility: ranging from small chamber formations to a full classical orchestra with winds. Its artistic proposal spans repertoire from the 17th to the 19th centuries performed on period instruments, as well as 20th-century programs interpreted with classical instruments.
The organization annually hosts the concert series “Nits Clàssiques de la Tramuntana”, with a program that extends beyond the mountains and the iconic venues of Palma to reach the towns of the "part forana" (the island's rural heartland).
Throughout its career, the Ensemble has had the privilege of accompanying internationally renowned soloists such as violinist Francisco Fullana, cellist Emmanuel Bleuse, flautist Charles Zebley, sopranos Sheva Tehoval, Lola Casariego, and Sofia Pedro, oboist Josep Domènech, and clarinetist Eric Hoeprich, among others. In Palma, they have performed in emblematic spaces such as Bellver Castle, the Teatre Principal, and Casal Solleric —as part of the 'Solleric d’Estiu' series— as well as the Cloister of Sant Francesc. Additionally, they co-organized the 'Deià Clàssics' festival with the Deià Town Council for three consecutive years. Beyond Mallorca, their activity has taken them to stages such as the BBVA Religious Music Festival in Vic and the La Mola Fortress in Menorca.
Committed to the future of music, Ensemble Tramuntana organizes an annual competition for young performers. The contest offers an exceptional prize: the opportunity to debut as a soloist with the ensemble. Each edition reflects the enthusiasm the project sparks among students, families, and the public—a stimulating energy that drives the organization to keep growing.
